Forthcoming talk on The Penn Recca Slate Mine and Hems Canal – January 2019

The Penn Recca Slate Mine was the only slate mine in Devon and was worked from the 1300’s. The unusual green slate was much valued and some notable buildings were roofed with it. During the 19th C employment at the mine created the parish of Landscove with a new church, school and vicarage. The Hems Canal was used for transport in later years.

Come and hear this fascinating story, as told by the Revd. Nicholas Pearkes on Friday 18th January 2019.

The Revd. Nicholas Pearkes is a well known and entertaining speaker who has great knowledge of this subject. He is the popular retired vicar of Littlehempston Church and amongst other claims to fame, fitted castors to the church pews so that the space could also be used for community activities.

Full details are available in the linked poster. This promises to be an interesting and entertaining talk.
