John Scotney

The Celebration of the life of John Scotney

Members and friends of Galmpton and Churston District Local History Group it is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the recent death of one of our Committee, John Scotney.

He only recently attended our AGM on 14th March and his passing has come as a considerable shock to us. He has been an immense intellectual presence within the History Group over the past years and it has been an honour for us all to have known him as a fount of knowledge and also, so importantly, as a true friend.

His early working life and then later with the BBC, made him a literary treasure-house with his own unique style of presentation.

Since coming to live down here in Galmpton with Diana, as well as becoming immersed in our History Group, he also became Chairman of Brixham Heritage Museum to which he also dedicated his time.

Using his own unique style of historical interpretation, he has fortunately left us a part of himself in books such as ‘BRIXHAM, its History and its place in History’.

Thank you John, we’ll miss you.

John Risdon (Chairman)
